About Barry Mason Jr.

Barry Mason Jr. is a guitarist, songwriter, and performer based in Calgary, Alberta, whose sound is an eclectic fusion of psychedelic-pop, neo-soul, jazz, funk, and folk. His music is best described as "weird and rad"—a phrase that reflects his distinctive, offbeat approach and deep groove. Barry's influences range from the virtuosity of Joe Pass and the innovative tones of Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Tame Impala, to the gritty funk of James Brown and the emotional songwriting of Elliott Smith. These diverse elements blend to shape a sound that's simultaneously complex and accessible, striking a balance between virtuosic technicality and raw emotion.

Barry’s live shows are an event in themselves—frenetic, unpredictable, and filled to the brim with deep emotional resonance. Known for blending musical risk-taking with humour, his performances reach beyond the confines of his recorded work. His effect-laden guitar tones are warm and immersive, creating a sonic landscape where emotion and energy flow freely. On stage, he channels his personal experiences with love, loss, jealousy, and self-doubt, crafting a musical journey that feels intimate and expansive.

In the studio, Barry crafts songs that reflect the same emotional depth, writing from a place of vulnerability. He doesn't approach songwriting with a strict focus on technique; instead, he allows the song to reveal itself to guide the music. This intuitive approach gives his songs an organic quality, with melodies and rhythms that feel effortless, even when they’re musically intricate. His work explores the complexities of relationships, from love and anger to self-reflection, creating tracks that are as personal as they are universal.

Over the years, Barry has built a reputation as a sought-after collaborator, always adjusting his approach to suit the needs of the project at hand. He’s equally comfortable taking a leadership role in the studio as he is supporting a project from behind the scenes. For him, the goal is always to serve the song—whether that means crafting a searing solo or creating the perfect groove to elevate a track. His musical versatility has earned him respect in a variety of musical circles, but it’s his original music that is his true focus moving forward.
